Bulldog clips also known as binder clips come in a variety of colours and finishes with printed tags

Bulldog clips are a simple device for binding pieces of paper and are sometimes refered to as binder clips. A bulldog clip or binder clip is a strip of sheet steel bent into the shape of a triangle with two equal sides and featuring rounded ends at the apex. Pressure along the base of the triangle clamps the two sides shut, and the rounded ends also prevent the sharp steel edges from damaging the paper surface. The rounded ends also serve to hold two pieces of stiff sprung steel wire, which act as levers and allow the clip to be opened.

The two slots cut in to each rounded end are ingeniously designed so that the wire levers can be folded down and out of the way once the clip has been attached, and the tension force of the wire holds them down on the surface of the paper. This keeps the clip relatively flat, for compact stacking. The levers can also be removed altogether by squeezing until they pop out of the rounded ends.

Binder clips come in different sizes from; extra large binder clips, jumbo binder clips. The binder clip sizes range from small binder clips 25mm up to jumbo binder clip 51mm. Also you can get decorative binder clips in different colours like white binder clips and metallic silver binder clips.

There are six standard sizes of bull dog clips that are in the modern office. A small bull dog clip size start at 12 mm at the base to 51 mm at the base. The sheet steel portion is usually painted black, with the handles chrome plated , but a variety of colors are also available.

The bulldog clip is generally used to replace a paperclip when larger volumes of paper are required to be held together, say 25 sheets or more.

The term binder clip is used in the United States of America to describe both this invention and an older device with the same function, which has rigid rather than folding handles and circular rather than triangular shaped sprung steel clip.
